Finding balance between blogging & studying

Both blogging and studying are very time-consuming, so trying to do both at the same time is not exactly easy. However, a lot of us try to find a balance between the two of them and find us constantly struggling to find the time we need to keep up with both. Today I want to write about how I do it. Of course, this is what works for me, but that doesn't mean this is the only way to do it.

1. Don't procrastinate

This is like the hardest one for me. I'm like always tired for whatever it is that I made that day. Every excuse seems like a good excuse to lay on my bed watching episodes of Friends. But procrastinating will only take time away from things you're going to have to do anyway.

2. Keep an agenda

Okay, so I know a lot of people have a special agenda/book/binder just for blogging, but I use only one for everything. I mean, it's already hard for me to do everything in my only agenda, image if I had more than one! Also, since there is only one of me, I'd like to see everything I have to do on one day at the same time. If I have plans, or I have stuff to do for Uni, I'll work on my posts a different day.

And a mini tip, I like to use different colors for different things. I've actually been using the same color code since high school:

  • Blue for birthdays
  • Pink for plans
  • Purple for deadlines
  • Green for exams (because it's the color of good luck, and I need A LOT of that!=
  • Orange for my blog (I used to use yellow for school days and orange for holidays, but when I started blogging I realized I needed a new color so yellow disappeared from my agenda)
  • Black pen for everything else

3. Keep up to date

This has a lot to do with not procrastinating. I like to keep up with uni so I will have free time for blogging. And so I can concentrate entirely on blogging and not be like "omg! will I have time to finish that assignment on time? Wait when was the midterm exam again?".

4. Don't make blogging a chore

If you don't feel like blogging, either because you have exams, or assignments, or an actual social life, or you're not feeling well, well, take a break. It's ok. Your blog can wait. And your readers will wait too. I blog because I love to blog, but if blogging became a chore, I'm pretty sure I'd hate doing it.

5. Write down all your ideas

If you have a blog, and you say you've never suffered from bloggers block, I do not believe you. Nope. That's impossible. So what I do is, every time I have an idea for a blog post, I write it down so I won't forget about it. And when I don't know what to blog that week, or I'm trying to overcome bloggers block, I will go back to my list of post ideas.

Another mini tip: if you have an iPhone, I like to use the reminders app. I have a list just for blog post ideas. I always have my iPhone with me, so I can add ideas in this list at any moment and you can check them when you've posted them.

6. Draft and schedule

When I have some free time, I like to go to that list of post ideas that I just mentioned before and start working on those blog posts. That way, when I don't have time to write new posts, I don't have to! And in those moments, I swear I wish I could travel back in time and hug my past self and tell her (her? or me?) how much I love her and how thankful I am.

7. Recycle your photos

Taking and editing the photos for my posts takes so much time. And the worst thing is that you cannot take them at any time, you have to take your photos when there is daylight. And I'm usually in class then so that's an added difficulty. So what I sometimes do (although maybe I should keep it as a secret) is to go through my phone and try to look for a photo that I had previously taken and I could use for that post.

Question of the day

How do you balance blogging with the rest of your activities?

Did you like this post? Why don't we keep in touch?

  1. Great tips! I really began to find blogging a chore during university, as I studied literature all I did was read and write for my degree and then when it came to having some free time I used to love writing my blog as I could write anything I wanted but overtime I just wanted to sit back and watch TV or hang out with friends instead of doing more reading and writing. I've got back into it now but some time off really helps!

I love how you've kept your colour coding up. I try to keep mine all in one place too but I never manage to. This year I have two diaries - one I keep all my blogging and home related stuff in (like jobs I've applied for and birthdays) and then I have another relating to my current job (i.e what days/shifts I'm working). Colour coding is the best though!

    1. Thank you! I totally feel you with the whole wanting to sit back thing. Keeping those two diaries is also a good idea, because when you're at work, you won't be able to do anything on your other agenda anyway, right?

  2. Really great tips, even for those of us who are no longer in school! Love the idea of keeping everything organized by color-coding different tasks and events!

  3. Muy buenos tips Be!

  5. Very helpful tips as I'm going to school and blogging! Planning ahead does help, but when it all gets too much I reduce the amount of posts during that month!

  6. Brilliant post! I have one diary and put everything in there too. The number of random phrases in it and my lab book and on post-it notes is ridiculous. It really does help to write these things down though!

  9. First of all, I love how you designed your blog! It's so colorful and clean at the same time! And amazing tips for managing blogging life while studying. I am in my last year of school and I can say that it is quite difficult. I wouldn't be able to pull this off if I didn't have my agenda, I can not go a day without it! And of course, writing down ideas whenever you get them is a great choice. I always write them down in my phone or notebook. Even if I am about to fall asleep and suddenly I get an idea, I get up and write it down because I just know that it will be forgotten in the morning, haha :)
I also try to write as many posts as I can when I have free time. Even briefly. That way I will have something to start with when I will need a post :)

And same! If I get an idea I have to write it down immediately (because I will have forgotten the next minute). We totally do things the same way!

  10. I'm currently on break but I'll be back at school next week so this is very helpful, thank you for sharing your tips! :) I only use one agenda for everything too because that's what works best for me - I just prefer having everything together I guess. Also writing down every single blogpost idea definitely helps & it's something i always do as well. I only just recently found your blog & wanted to let you know that I'm loving it x

  11. I struggle with the whole uni/full time work and blogging situation but I love it too much to give it up. It's became something more than a hobby! I'm a terrible procrastinator, I intend to do something then all of a sudden I'm on my 2nd episode of once upon a time. I do need a boon to organise myself though, I think it will help me a little x

  12. Aw these are lovely tips!!! I find that making the most of your time when you can't study e.g in bed at night or on the bus to college perfect blogging time! I also always write all my posts on my phone and then put them togther at weekends! It's a lot less time consuming and makes it easier to get on with studying!

I am so glad you followed me on Twitter! I came and a nosy at your blog and now I have fallen in love with it! Thank you x

  14. Such a great post and really useful tips! I have to make sure I don't spend too mcuh time on my blog, I'm coming up to my final year at uni so I will need to put studying first! Something else I've found useful though is on the days I don't post, I revamp my old posts (update/edit/improve the photos and writing) and promote them instead :) much quicker than writing a new post, and I've found lots of posts I think are great but had forgotten about in my archives!

  15. I loved this post! I've decided to bookmark it so I can come back to it all the time! It's pretty difficult being a full-time student and blogger, with zero time management skills! But I've definitely come to realise that I need to be kinder to myself - if I'm struggling to manage everything, I just need to take a little break from blogging and focus on clearing my head and getting excited about it again :D

One thing I can recommend is, on those days when you just want to lie in bed and watch Friends, consider watching while you work ;) as I write this comment I'm rewatching Big Band Theory for the umpteenth time haha

  16. I think this works for blogging and any other obligation, because I know it's good advice for blogging and teaching! I wish I color coded my agenda- I always try and end up loosing my pens:(. It's been a hard lesson to learn, but I have learned that you really can't force it when you just don't feel it or have too much else to do. Such a good post!

Lovely tips :) I did a 'what I learnt after a month of blogging' tips on my own blog and I have will be taking yours to plan for sure!
